The End

What do you think happens to Jonas and Gabe at the end of The Giver? To the community?

i think Jonas and Gabe probably went to the real world and enjoyed their lives there while they grow up. I think the community is free of being 'perfect' because like Jonas said he heard music from faraway.

The ending stinks. There I said it. No one else said it, but they all thought it. It was too open, too mysterious and had no closure. I have seen endings like this before and they were good, but this one was no where near as good as those.

I think the ending was to dull. It didn't tell what happened to anyone in the commmunity, Jonas, The Giver or Gabe. It kind of shows that the author ran out of lines to complete the book, probably. Or maybe the author wanted us to guess what happened! Ms. Mayo, you should help her out in writing and in conclusions. She really needs it!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe that the ending should have been expanded on. She didn't write what happened because she wanted us to create our own good or bad ending, no? Well, it's hard to visulize a story where the hero dies at the end when it's completely unnecessary. So that rules out quite a few endings. A lot of people will just throw down the book when finished and automatically believe it to be a good ending, whether it is actually written or not. Which just leaves us with an ending that leaves much to be desired.

when i finish reading this book, it felt liker someone had ripped ou the last few pages. i felt as if the author kept building up the anticipation and then just left you hanging. Did Jonas live or die? Personally, i think Jonas died, he had traveled so far and was so beaten that i don't think he could have survived. i think when he saw the lights at the end of the book he was delerious, all of the memories he recieved came into his head as his body lay freezing in the snow. I don't think the community survived either. simply because they were in such trauma when Rosary died, and she han't recieved half the memories jonas did. I think all the memories became too much for them to handle and the comunity went into disrepair.

I think that jonas and gabe find a better life in another society a life where the can share pain, express felling and enjoy other things in life

I think Gabe & Jonas dont go back to the community, and they start their own free lives somewhere else. I also think that the community will fall apart and it will turn into an individual world sooner or later, because its last 2 recievers havent managed the job, and I also think that the Giver willsoon be with his daughter Rosemary soon.

I think Jonas and Gabe found a place to live and a place to understand the real world. For the community, the life will go on, meaning that the world never ends.

I think Lois left it for us to figure out. I read Gathering Blue and it has nothing to do with The Giver but it does mention Jonas' name twice I think. At the end of the Giver it could of all been a dream. A flashback is possible too. What im confused about is who is narrorating the story? Is is Gabriel? No one knows. Also I heard that The Giver movie is coming out fall 2008. If it is im going to see it!

It's a bit hard to end the book with just "And then he died.", guys.

I agree with Vikki Lennon, obviously Jonas and Gabe died. Why else would a sled magically appear at the top of the hill and he slides down to the house he remembers tha was celebrating christmas. This was his type of heaven. The beginning of the book with the memory of the sled and the ending with the memory of christmas. the author was showing that it ended. He didnt fail in his mission to change his old community but he faield in finding Elsewhere. Although i cant explain the music he heard maybe he was retreiving his full dialog of the world before his slow cold death with the one boy he loved.

My idea is that Jonas lived. If you read through Gathering Blue and the Messenger ( Other Books By Lois Lowry ) You would have noticed that in The Messenger, A young adult appears on a red sled. Also the fact that The Giver left off with Jonas In a sled it makes sense, Hes in a sled at the end of one book and appears in another one. I Hope that you guys can see that and hopefully think to see other sides of arguements. I could be wrong Jonas could have died and went to a supposed "Heaven" Along with Gabe.

I think Jonas lived,He saw Lights on Trees ( Christmas Trees ) and Heard singing ( Christmas Carols ) And he was on a sled, That sled could have been there from kids playing in the snow and as for the people waiting for him .. Those people could have been parents mistaking him for they're child or Jonas could have the crucial feeling that these people are friendly. The music.. another thing contributing to my belief that Jonas made it to Elsewhere and Elsewhere was in the middle of celebrating Christmas playing music for this time, Also how December was nearing in the beginning of the book.. It might have just fitted close enough to AGAIN contribute to my belief.
