Themes

We've discussed "theme" as the big ideas that the author is trying to convey to the reader; theme is the message that you are to take away from the reading when you are finished. The theme of a novel is usually one that we can apply to our own lives.

What do you think that the author was trying to say through the story in The Giver?

How does it inform what you think about your own life?

Have you learned anything new about the world? others? yourself?

I believe that the main theme of this Book is that there is no such thing as a perfect society. Since we kind of reviewed this before we started reading this book I undertsand now that our society is way from perfect but we have many advatages and oppurtunities that others dont have.

I think the message the author was trying to convey or the theme of the book was appreciate what you have. So many people in this world wish that they could have everything that we take advantage of on a daily basis. I’ve learned that in today’s world we've grown so accustomed to the simple things, like color or music, that we no longer have an appreciation for them. This book has made me think about how often I say “I wish…,” and as a result, I now say “I am blessed.”

I think that the main theme of the book is to show us how much freedoms that we have in our society today. And to show us that although everyone wishes for a perfect society, it is impossible to have one. i <3 Ms mayo

i think the author was trying to say that we can't ever have a perfect society. I mean if we did, the author showed us how a perfect society is and how much flaws it would have. So be happy with what you have. It informs me by that you know how other people keep saying that life sucks or something, but be appreciated with what you have. everything can't be perfect as people wish it to be. We should be happy with what we have now.
I haven't really learned anything about the new world. It's not perfect, just corrupted. I learned from others that cherish what you have before you lose it. From myself, i learned to correct my mistakes before you make moreeee in the future

I agree with everyone else. I believe that the major theme is to stop taking everything around us for granted. We have a lot, escepecially since we all live in the US, as opposed to a poor, small country. We have so much around us, but as the saying goes, you never know what you have until you loose it. I guess for Jonas, it's exactly the opposite.

I also think Lois Lowery was trying to convey that there is no such thing as a "perfect" society, and that trying to control people and supress their emotions will only backfire. The book portrayed the utopian society in such a terrible light it made me so thankful not to be a part of it. i live in a world in which i can feel and think on my own, which is my freedom. it made me realize that we must appreciate the differences in each other, beacsue the world would be a very awful palce if we were all the same, we might even end up like Jonas' world.

I think the author was trying to tell us that life is something you can't take for granted. When you look at how horrible the life the communtiy from giver is you feel that you have a better life than them and you should learn to appreciate it

I think it makes us realize how lucky we are, that we live in a place where we can be individuals and we are not all the same, but at the same time,we all get controled sometimes by people, such as in school, the teachers, or by our parents/family members, but its because they just want the best for us, but its better then listening to a voice out of a speaker box.

I think that the book makes us realize, how fortunate we are to not have a utopian society. I agree with vickie.(Manpreet Kaur)

I think the author was trying to say that even with a perfect place, there can be some downfalls to it. Threre is no place that's perfect. If there was it would be just like the book.

i agree with samantha i also think the author was trying to tell us- the readers- to appreciate how life is for us mow and to stop taking everything what we have for granted. i think this book informs us that we have it good and there could be other people wishin that they had life like this. i have learned a very important thing from this book which is that u cant take life for granted because u are not promised tomorrow.+

I think the author is trying to say is that no one is perfect. The world is also not perfect, we all have choices, we all have different talents, we all have different things that we like and different things that we don't. In Jonas's community, there were no choices, no feeling, no emotions, no knowledge, etc. The community in the Giver, gave each individual person a role. The person can not change their role, only accept it. That's why, for us, it's easy, we don't need to be worried about anything. If we don't want it, we don't need to accept it. We have choices, we can rather be good or rather be smart. We can see colors, we can choose what is right and what is wrong. We can choose our life and choose our own will and wish. I learn that you can choose your own life instead of someone chooses it for you.

i think that the main theme of the book is to show how different communities can be and show how you can be lied to.
